Each muncipality in Elgin county walked away with some funding after the provincial and federal governments handed out millions of dollars Friday to area governments.
At the top of the list stood Southwold township, which received $797,167 from both levels of government toward a $2.3 million water-distribution system extension for the southeast part of the municipality.
"Some of my constituents, they'll be ecstatic when we break the news to them," said Mayor Jim McIntyre, who added the project, in its third phase, has taken six years. Southwold received another $168,000 from each for $504,000 in municipal office renovations.
The County of Elgin scored second in terms of cash with $686,667 from each for a $2 million rehabilitation of Calton Line.
"We're very happy, I know how hard they work to get things going," said Malahide Mayor John Wilson, praising work achieved in getting $566,666 from each for a $1.7 million South Dorchester fire station and community hall.
Other recipients include:
- Some $444,935 from each for Central Elgin for $1.3 million worth of sanitary sewer work on the Elmwood/Bailey Avenue project and $158,333 from each for a $478,000 for a watermain project in Port Stanley;
- Dutton received $341,667 from each for $1 million worth of sewage treatment facility improvements and $105,000 from each to replace a $315,000 culvert on Chalmers Line;
- West Elgin received $200,000 from each for $600,000 worth of arena rehabilitation;
- The town of Aylmer now has $166,665 from each for $500,000 in sanitary sewer work and $78,000 from each for a $234,000 town hall retrofit; and
- Bayham got $32,400 from each to fund $97,200 worth of work on the Carson Line bridge.
