Frugal Government Catches Eye of the Opposition
October 03, 2006

OTTAWA, ON – Joe Preston MP for Elgin – Middlesex – London, rose in the House today to address Ralph Goodale’s recent comments about the Conservatives lack of spending.

Goodale, former finance minister, commented Monday that he found the latest quarter reports, on travel and hospitality, odd.

Minister Michael Fortier, Public Works, Minister Loyola Hearn, Fisheries and House Leader Rob Nicholson, reported zero dollars spent in hospitality for the three-month summer quarter. This compared to a previous Liberal record of $138 pizza’s and $800 dinners for two.

Mr. Speaker,

The Liberal culture of entitlement continues. Only now it’s about frugal conservative Cabinet Ministers being admonished by the Member from Wascana (Goodale) for not spending at the level of the former Liberal cabinet.

Mr. Speaker, I have seen opposition party’s react to policy differences. I have seen oppositions upset over the spending priorities of the government.

But a new first has happened! We have an opposition whining about government ministers who aren’t spending enough!!!

Mr. Speaker, I would like to tell the Member from Wascana (Goodale) again – It’s not his money.
It comes from the taxpayer, and whenever possible it goes back to the taxpayer.

Mr. Speaker, a new government is here now, and regardless of what the Liberals want we can’t and won’t spend like they did. The days of Entitlement are over for them, and we won’t do it!!
