ST. THOMAS, ONTARIO – The Government of Canada is helping create jobs and increase the profile of Elgin County by extending the tourist season. A contribution of more than $250,000 was announced today by Member of Parliament for Elgin-Middlesex-London Joe Preston, to enable the Elgin County Railway Museum to keep its doors open to tourists all year round.
“Tourism is one of the best ways we can create jobs and boost the local economy,” said MP Preston. “Our Government is committed to working together to help communities like this one stay strong and competitive by attracting visitors from all around the region.”
Elgin County Railway Museum, one of the area’s premier attractions, will use the additional funds to hire a manager, bookkeeper and office administrator to allow the museum to keep its doors open to tourists all year round. Since 1956, the railway has been part of St. Thomas, contributing to the overall development of Elgin County. In all, 26 railways have passed through this town labeled the ‘Railway Capital of Canada’. The extended season will create three jobs.
Funding is being provided through the Sand Plains Community Development Fund administered by the Ontario Association of Community Futures Development Corporations. The fund targets community-based initiatives that support regional development, attract and retain people and investment, and stimulate business development and job creation.
