ST. THOMAS, ON – Joe Preston MP for Elgin – Middlesex – London, spoke to a group of approximately 100 tobacco farmers this morning, during a peaceful bale protest.

Tobacco farmers from across South western Ontario met in front of the First Avenue offices, to bring their message to Mr. Preston, that they need an exit strategy now. Led by Tobacco Farmers In Crisis (TFIC) Chairman Brian Edwards, the group asked questions as to the present government’s stand on an exit strategy and when they can expect results.

“I can’t promise a date for this exit program, but I can tell you that we are working hard to ensure that a strategy will be forthcoming. We understand the plight of tobacco farmers, and all farmers across Canada. This is a government that is made up of Members from predominately rural ridings, if we can’t get this done for you then no one can,” Preston declared to the 100 farmers gathered.

Joining the tobacco farmers, Ontario Flue Cured Growers Tobacco Marketing Board, Chairman, Fred Neukamm, accompanied by a number of Board members and Mark Bannister vice-chair of TFIC.

“This government recognizes the problem facing the tobacco industry is one that will have to be managed through collaborative efforts of industry, the province of Ontario and various federal departments,” Preston stated.
